Last year ING shut down all of my accounts. No warning. All my accounts showed $0. I couldn't pay my mortgage, I couldn't pay for petrol, food, my sons tuckshop. I couldn't access my own money. Why? Because I was born in the US. My parents (both Australian) were living/working in the states. I popped out. They didn't apply for a social security number for me because we headed back to Australia soon after I was born. That's it. That's the end of the story. You would think nothing more right? Nope. After 43 years, the US shut down my accounts, assuming I was committing tax evasion by not submitting tax returns.
My choices were to apply for a SSN and then submit 5 years worth of tax returns (hoping that my Australian tax credits cover any US tax owed) or renounce my citizenship. I have Australian citizenship, so I was fine to renounce my citizenship except for the fact that I don't have a spare $4k to give to a government I fiercely oppose. So here I am...
If I sell 80 of these hand sprayed prints, the cost of renunciation will be covered. I will still need to pay the accountants to do 5 years of back-taxes and travel to the Melbourne Consulate to renounce in-person and any extra taxes the US government demand. But it’s a start...
